The removal of the statue of Christopher Columbus in Tambrind Square on Duncan Street in Port-of-Spain, continues to be a topic of much discussion. Yesterday, Port-of-Spain Mayor Joel Martinez met with Project Director for the Cross Rhodes Freedom Project – Shabaka Kambon and Donna Bermudez-Bovell, Queen of the Warao Nation as a petition supporting the statue’s removal was handed over to the mayor for further consideration. The petition gathered almost 8,000 signatures since it was started last week.
Yesterday’s meeting however ended when a clash erupted between those who want the statue removed and those who wish for it to be kept.
Following a shouting match between both sides, and the forced removal of one person from the meeting, Mayor Martinez eventually committed to having an answer regarding the removal of the statue by next week.
He noted that the City Corporation’s statutory body will meet next Wednesday at 2Pm following which he should have an answer.
