Commission of enquiry for Las Alturas Housing Project

Las Alturas apartment complexThere will be a commission of enquiry into the Las Alturas Housing buildings H and I. This was announced yesterday by Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar.

Speaking during the budget debate in the Parliament, Mrs. Persad Bissessar noted that the Alturas Housing Project was an initiative in 2004, under the then PNM Government which was designed and contracted out by the PNM, paid for by the PNM, completed and subsequently collapsed under the PNM.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar noted that the buildings were meant to accommodate 48 families, however it is now costing government $26 million dollars plus the cost of demolition. She questioned whose shoulders responsibility of this, should fall on.

The Prime Minister said initial checks conducted have shown that several high profile names within the People’s National Movement, have popped up.

The Las Alturas Towers, consisting of 297 apartments were built at Lady Young Road in Morvant after a contract worth some $67 million dollars was awarded to China Jiangsu International Corporation by the then board of UDECOTT which consisted of Calder Hart and others.

Buildings H and I, which cost tax payers $26 million dollars is now being investigated after the project was abandoned, the buildings having reportedly been deemed unstable and uninhabitable as a result of cracking.

    Another waste of time inquiry/witchunt to distract form their own scandals and corruption.It will forever linger and be incomplete like lifesport,clico,hcu,1990,canned juice.Whenever the inquiries have any big fish involvement they halt till we forget.
