The Independent Liberal Party’s (ILP) challenge to the legality on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill is expected to be heard before the court today.
The ILP filed its cases on August 29th hours after the Bill was passed in the Upper House with three Independent Senators throwing their support behind the legislation.
ILP deputy political leader Rekha Ramjit filed a constitutional motion and two affidavits challenging that the bill was an infringement of citizens’ fundamental rights and freedom listed in Sections 4 and Section 5 of the Constitution.
Ms. Ramjit is expected to represent the party while Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and a high powered team of lawyers will represent the state.
