The Constitution Amendment Bill (2014) has been sent back to the Lower House after being passed in the Senate late last night.
The Bill which needed the support of at least one Independent Senator received support from three – Dr. Rolph Balgobin and Dr Dhanayshar Mahabir and David Small.
Senators Balgobin, Mahabir and Small had hinted that they would have supported the bill if changes were made.
During the Bill’s Committee Stage three clauses of the Bill were amended.
Dr Mahabir had suggested that the right to recall Clause (8) be amended.
He explained that the recall provision should be shortened to two years since it gives the MPs time to perform.
Dr. Balgobin echoed a question raised by Senator Helen Drayton on whether there would be a statement of reason on the recall application.
In response Attorney General Anand Ramlogan explained that this could lead to conflict.
No date has been set for the debate in the House of Representatives.
