Constitutional Amendment Bill passed

by | Aug 12, 2014

NEWS GRAPHIC 9The Constitution Amendment Bill was debated in a marathon session which saw members of parliament ending at 4:15 this morning.

Winston Dookeran and Carolyn Seepersad Bachan voted against the Bill while Roger Samuel abstained.

However the Bill was approved.

The Bill had been a major source of contention especially with the opposition People national Movement.

The party held emergency meetings prior to debate on the Bill to decide a way forward.

A call was made for party supporters to converge outside Parliament yesterday to show their disagreement with the Bill.

And the Congress of the People in meetings held before the debate, made a decision to ask the Prime Minister to delay debate on the Bil.

However despite this the Bill was still debated and approved early this morning.

The final tally was 23 for, 14 against with 1 abstention.
