The World Health Organization’s emergency committee is meeting in Geneva to assess the global risks posed by the Coronavirus and decide whether or not it should be declared an international public health emergency – as happened with swine flu and Ebola.
Such a declaration, if made, could see advice issued on travel or trade restrictions. Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals. In rare cases, they can be transmitted from animals to humans.
The viruses can make people sick, usually with a mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, similar to a common cold.
This is according to Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram who spoke with News Power Now on Thursday. He said that symptoms are similar to the Influenza Virus adding that severe abdominal pain is one of the symptom that persons should be aware of. He said that persons who have the symptoms should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
