Counter hunger striker calls off his fast

by | Oct 20, 2014

RAVI B MAHARAJPublic pressure and concerns for his health have contributed to counter hunger striker Ravi B Maharaj’s decision to call off his hunger strike.

Maharaj revealed this morning that he was amazed that Dr. Kublalsingh was so healthy 34 days into his hunger strike today, given the toll such an action would take on a person’s body and internal organs.

Ravi B Maharaj fainted yesterday morning on the pavement 5 days into his hunger strike and had to be rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Dr. Kublalsing expressed sympathy for Mr. Maharaj revealing that Maharaj did not use proper techniques to prepare for his hunger strike.

According to reports, affiliates of Dr. Kublalsingh’s Re-Route Movement (HRM) realized yesterday at around 9.30 a.m. that something was wrong with 29-year-old Maharaj.

Members of the group Project 40 reveal that they were on their way over to speak to Maharaj when they realized that he had collapsed.

Group member Prakash Rampersad said that on rushing over they checked the counter hunger striker, however he was unresponsive.

They said following several calls to the ambulance services they had to flag down an off-duty Guard and Emergency Branch officer who took Maharaj to the Port of Spain General Hospital in his Nissan Wingroad.

He said they were told by ambulance personnel that they were in the middle of a shift change and an ambulance would take longer than usual to arrive.

Rampersad said Maharaj was subject to severe dehydration and added that since he took up his position lower down Gray Street on Wednesday morning (October 15), they had always kept in contact with him, despite their opposing positions with regard to construction of the Debe to Mon Desir section of the extension of the Solomon Hochoy Highway to Point Fortin.

Like Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan, Maharaj has called on Kublalsingh to go public with his medical records.

Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh is into his 34th day of his hunger strike today.
