A battle is brewing between TSTT and the company’s bargaining body, the Communication Workers Union as the state owned telecommunications provider is preparing to send home hundreds of employees in a restructuring exercise.
President of the union Clyde Elder told News Power Now this morning that while the union accedes that there needs to be some restructuring of the Company, it is concerned by what he describes as efforts to get rid of the union.
Mr. Elder accused TSTT of ‘union busting’ tactics, saying that only the unionized staff will be decreased.
When asked exactly why he feels there is an attempt by the company to get rid of the union, he said that politics plays a major role.
Following a five hour long meeting with TSTT officials yesterday, the CWU President revealed that the plan by TSTT will reduce the union’s membership by more than half…from about 1,600 workers to just under 700 workers.
He added however that TSTT has not given the union an exact date for the restructuring.
