Former Government Minister Devant Maharaj has announced his intention to challenge this country’s sedition laws, this as his lawyers accuse the Government of attempting to use archaic laws to maliciously persecute him via those laws.
After Mr. Maharaj released the phone number of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and National Security Minister Stuart Young on social media and urged people to call them and complain about matters of public interest, Minister Young claimed that Mr Maharaj’s actions bordered on that of sedition.
In a letter sent to the Attorney General by Maharaj’s attorney, Kiel Taklalsingh; Maharaj indicated his intention to legally challenge the constitutionality of certain portions of the Sedition Act.
Mr. Maharaj says that the Act should be struck down as unconstitutional and unlawful.
He added that the Government is using the law to threaten citizens into silence should they express a dissenting view that is critical of the behavior and conduct of the Government.
Mr. Maharaj is calling for inter alia, sections 3 and 4 of the Sedition Act Chapter 11:04 to be struck down describing it as undemocratic, inconsistent with the constitution as the Supreme law and therefore void to the extent of such inconsistency.
His lawyers claim that furthermore, those sections infringe on his rights to freedom of expression and to express political views.
