Doubles vendor says increase is warranted but admits it’s not because of the fuel increase

DOUBLES (1)The talk on everyone’s lips across Trinidad and Tobago today seems to be the sudden increase of the price of doubles- a local delicacy. Reports are that doubles vendors have decided to increase their product costs from $4 to $5, citing the increase in vehicular fuel prices following Monday’s budget presentation.

News Power Now spoke with the owner of Ali’s doubles in Barataria who said $5 is a good price but he feels this price should not be charged by all doubles vendors.

He went on to say that Trinbagonians would have no problem purchasing the delicacy overseas for $1USD.

When I saw the article I said to myself, more increase in prices again! But them immediately I remembered that’s the reason I left Trinidad thus those increase do not apply to me. What hurt me was the last comment made by the representative of Ali’s Doubles who brazenly said that TT$5.00 was a good price as people would have no problem paying US$1.00 abroad. Here is my problem with that – the average worker or school child who buys doubles as a meal replacement because food is just to expensive in Trinidad does not earn a US salary or its equivalent. Secondly, the fact that he is comfortable to quote US prices for Trini goods is a tell tale sign that the TT dollar has no value. I bend my head in shame.
