Food price hike and poorer quality produce is unavoidable following Tropical Storm

President of the Agricultural Society of Trinidad and Tobago (ASTT) Dhano Sookoo is today saying that an increase in food prices is unavoidable.

She says that many farmers have suffered crippling losses due to flooding and damages caused by Tropical Storm Bret.

Sookoo says that promises of compensation for farmers would not prevent the hike in prices since many times the financial gratuity being offered does not cover all of the farmers’ losses.

She warned consumers to expect higher prices and poorer quality of produce in the coming weeks and months.

She said that the Government needs to get serious about food security if a food shortage is to be avoided.
