The University of the West Indies Principal, Professor Clement Sankat, believes food security must be placed high on the national agenda.
He made the comment at a function to celebrate forty years of diplomatic ties between this country and China.
In March this year the Food Production Ministry in a statement said the agriculture sector had expanded by 5.1 percent.
It added the four billion dollars food import bill has been reduced by two percent.
Professor Sankat said the country’s ability to feed itself is critical.
