Four played, four postponed in shaky start to TT’s Super League Football season

by | Jul 17, 2014

sando-marchan-army (2)Because it was the match with the earlier start than the others, Kern Cupid had the distinction of scoring the first goal of the 2014 season of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association’s National Super League and his Club Sando team also figured as the first match-winners.

But the League which is 16-team strong this season, up from 13 last year, did not enjoy its full eight-match schedule yesterday as the matches involving the four Tobago teams were not played.

League commissioner Neville Ferguson told NEWSPOWER Sport last evening that airline travel to Tobago for the four Trinidad-based clubs was not on comfort street and the decision was taken to postpone the matches.

Ferguson noted that available flights to Tobago for the teams’ presented pre-dawn departures from Trinidad which would have incurred higher costs for the teams’ stay.

The Tobago home teams Goal City, 1976 FC Phoenix, Stokely Vale and Bethel United had respective opponents TT Defence Force, Las Lomas United, Real Maracas and Malabar FC on schedule yesterday at different grounds on the island.

In yesterday’s early kick-off match at the Guayaguayare Recreation Ground, Cupid’s hard-driven shot for the 56th minute goal put Club Sando on the way to a 2-1 win over defending champions Guaya United in front of an eager home crowd.

Akeen Humphrey’s tap-in in the 64th minute made it 2-nil for Club Sando and when Hakeen Rollingson struck a scorcher with eight minutes to regulation time, the Guaya fans settled down for their team’s late rally.

But it was Club Sando holding out and gaining a measure of revenge over the team that beat them by one point for the title in the 2013 season that began in July last year and ended in February this year.

The Club Sando/Guaya match kicked off at 3.30, half an hour before the scheduling for the seven other matches.

Former champions WASA FC started on a winning note as well yesterday 3-2 over newcomers La Horquetta at UTT’s O’Meara Arima Ground.

But newcomers Petrotrin Palo Seco blanked Joe Public 2-nil at the Marvin Lee Stadium and on the YTC Arouca Ground last season’s lowdown pair Siparia Spurs and FC Santa Rosa shared points in a 1-1 draw.

The teams come out to play on Sunday again.
