Full Story !! Local Govt Elections – PNM 9 corporations – UNC 5 corporations

PNM LOCAL GOV CANDIDATESThe People’s National Movement (PNM) has captured nine of the 14 municipal corporations and the United National Congress (UNC) retained five of the eight corporations it contested during a low voter turnout at Monday’s local government elections.

The PNM made a clean sweep of the 10 seats in the Diego Martin Corporation and the UNC took all nine seats in Penal/Debe.

While the Congress of the People (COP) was defeated in all five corporations it contested, it did manage to rake in five seats – three in the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation, one in Arima and one in San Fernando.

The Independent Liberal Party (ILP) picked up two seats in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, while the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) and the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) failed to win a single seat.

Preliminary figures show that just about 27 percent of the 1 million and 36 thousand registered voters exercised their franchise in the 136 electoral districts.

The three-way contest between the PNM, UNC and ILP was tightest in the eight-seat Chaguanas Borough, with the PNM and UNC each winning three districts, and the ILP, two.

Each party’s vote tally in Chaguanas will be critical in deciding the allocation of the four aldermen positions under the newly introduced proportional representation system.

This in turn could play a role in determining which party gets the mayorship, unless any two parties combine their support for a candidate of mutual choice.
Prime Minister and UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar said the allocation of aldermen was now in the hands of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), which will apply the proportional representation computations to its official figures to work out how the aldermen are to be divided.
