Chagauanas West Member of Parliament, Ganga Singh, has been appointed Opposition Chief Whip.
Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad Bissessar says the Clerk of the House of Representatives has been informed of the decision.
Last week the position of Opposition Chief Whip was vacated by Oropouche East MP, Dr Roodal Moonilal.
He said it would be inappropriate for him to hold the post while challenging Mrs. Persad-Bissessar for the political leadership of the United National Congress.
The UNC Political Leader noted that Mr. Singh is very experienced with respect to the duties of an Opposition Chief Whip as he has served in this capacity from 2002-2006 and had most recently been serving as Deputy Chief Whip of the Opposition Bench.
Additionally, Mr Singh served as Leader of Government Business in the Senate under the People’s Partnership administration”.
The former Prime Minister also gave the assurance that “Mr Singh had been very effective and disciplined in managing both the House and Senate caucuses in the past and she anticipates his leadership as Opposition Chief Whip now would be invaluable in holding the present PNM government accountable in the House of Representatives.”
