The dead man has been identified as Devanand Ramdass of Blanchisseuse Road, Arima.
Police reports state that at about 2:20am, Ramdass and his 34-year-old wife were both awakened from sleep by the sound of loud banging on the front door of the house.
Two men forced their way into the house and entered the couple’s bedroom.
One of the intruders pushed Ramdass’ wife to the side while the other pointed a shotgun at the gardener’s face and pulled the trigger.
Mrs. Ramdass screamed as the killers made their escape, running off.
The police were called in and officers quickly mounted a mobile search of the surrounding area for the killers but no one was arrested.
An autopsy done yesterday at the Forensic Science Centre, St James confirmed Ramdass died almost immediately after being shot with portions of his face blown-off by the shotgun pellets.
Relatives said Ramdass was a father of two children aged one and three.
He was the sole breadwinner in his family and sold his vegetable produce at a shop.
Police sources said they had no motive for the murder and investigations are continuing.
