The Meteorological Office has officially declared the start of the 2016 ‘Rainy Season’.
In a statement issued by the MET office Meteorologist Shakeer Baig stated that
once the initial episode of rainfall activity is triggered by the ITCZ or a Tropical Wave, it signals the start of the country’s rainy season.
Such features will be the mainstay for the next five months in yielding rainfall.
Baig said this moist, unstable environment, along with significantly enhanced upper-level conditions, produced the much welcomed early season rainfall.
Over the 30-hour period, beginning at 2 am on Sunday, the TT Met Office recorded 77.6 millimetres of rainfall at Piarco, Trinidad with higher rainfall accumulations occurring in other localities.
Baig said there may be a reprieve in rainfall activity over the next few weeks following this episode.
