Government and Oppositions’ stance on Constitution reform criticized

by | Aug 8, 2014

Basdeo PandayBoth the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader have come under heavy scrutiny from a former holder of both offices, for their positions on controversial amendments to the constitution.

Early today, Basdeo Panday posted on his Facebook page that neither PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar nor Dr. Keith Rowley wanted constitutional reform because they would prefer the present system that encourages racial voting.

He stated that the amendments produced by Mrs. Persad-Bissessar had convinced him that he was right.

Mr. Panday called on Dr. Rowley to produce an alternative to the amendments since his party does not agree with the Government proposals.

According to Mr. Panday, the most important failing of the Constitution is that once the Government is elected the people have no control over it.

Therefore, he has called for the powers of the executive and the legislature to be separated.

Panday stated if this is not done any proposal for constitutional reform would be a joke at best and a fraud at worst.
