GOVERNMENT DENIES IGNORING SUGAR WORKERS PLIGHT

SUGARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRThe government is denying claims that it has been ignoring concerns raised by former sugar workers and has not delivered on promises made to them.

On Saturday the ex-workers marched from Brechin Castle to Rienzi Complex in Couva and called on the state to honor the Deyalsingh Judgment of 2008 on the matter.

They claim they have been waiting for more than ten years for legal entitlement of land due to their Voluntary Employment Separation package.

All Trinidad General Workers Union President , Nirvan Maharaj, in a News Power Now interview on Tuesday said the group is planning to intensify efforts and mobilize its members in a bid to get promises made to former Caroni sugar workers fulfilled.

However, in a News Power Now interview this afternoon, Food Production Minister, Devant Maharaj , said when the government got into office not a single agricultural and residential lease was given out to the former sugar workers.

Minister Maharaj said the Ministry has also been handling the distribution process in a transparent manner.
