In an attempt to cut the nation’s food import bill, the Government is offering farmers several initiatives to rebuild the local food basket.

Speaking with reporters after the launch of the National Campaign to promote food security in this country earlier today, Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar said more agricultural land together with new incentives have been allocated to meet the needs of farmers.

When asked if her Government plans to upgrade the next budget to suit farmers and boost the Agricultural Sector, Mrs. Persad Bissessar said both the Minister of Finance and Planning will have to decide on the matter.

On Tuesday this week farmers met with Food Production Minister Vasant Bharath to discuss compensation of their crops which were bulldozed by the Housing Development Corporation to construct homes.

Minister Bharath told the farmers the matter was now in the hands of the Housing Minister.
