Green Market urging citizens to consume more local produce and grow what they can.

NEWS GRAPHIC 1As concerns about the cost of living and the price of food mounts, the group- Green Market Santa Cruz is urging citizens to consume more local produce and grow what they can.

President of the organisation, Vickie Assevero, in a News Power Now interview this week said this approach is necessary especially in light of the escalating food import bill.

Recently the group, which was formed in 2012, held a Breadfruit and Avocado Festival at the Croisee in San Juan.

The event attracted a strong turnout from the public and was used to highlight the benefits of buying local and utilizing food items that are available.

As good and as patriotic as it sounds, I am still concerned about the report that Trinidad has the highest usage of dangerous chemicals (pesticide, insecticide and fungicide) in the region. What is being done to reduce the reported usage? How dangerous and poisonous is the locally grown food that I consume? What random tests are being done and how often?
