The Government has stated that according to a recent IMF report it has been managing the economy of Trinidad and Tobago well.
This is despite the challenges of low oil and gas prices.
An International Monetary Fund mission, headed by Mr. Elie Canetti, visited Trinidad and Tobago during March 3–March 15, 2016 to conduct the annual Article IV consultation.
Mr. Canetti issued a statement at the mission’s conclusion which revealed in part that despite the great challenges posed by the need to adjust to energy prices, Trinidad and Tobago still had enormous strengths, including a well-educated work force and a stable political system.
With substantial financial buffers and low, albeit rising levels of public debt, Trinidad and Tobago the report stated was not in a crisis.
However the Opposition Leader stated that that IMF report confirmed that the People’s national Movement Administration inherited a sound economy from the People’s Partnership Government.
