Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is being challenged by the Independent Liberal Party, (ILP) Interim Political Leader, Jack Warner, to call an early general election, two years before it is constitutionally due.
Mr. Warner made the appeal while delivering the feature address at the I.L.P.’s mass public meeting held at Gasparillo Junction Tuesday evening and carried live on Power 102.1 fm.
He claimed the People’s Partnership government was losing touch with citizens and was affected by internal strife.
Mr. Warner then accused the government of choosing candidates for next month’s Local Government Election before the screening process was completed.
Meantime, without going into much detail, the I.L.P. interim leader responded to claims that a political party had pledge one billion dollar to be used in its campaign for the polls in October.
He said if he had to spend a billion dollar to beat “them fellows” referring to the PP Government, then his supporters should beat him.
Warner was referring to claims made by Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dr. Suruj Rambachan, in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, that “a certain political party has pledged $1 billion for campaign financing in its bid to remove the People’s Partnership from office”
Dr. Rambachan alleged that the same political party had paid upfront $5 million to local media houses “to lock down” advertising space for the October 21 local government election.
