Attorney for the accused in the Keynna Cumberbatch rape and murder case received some stern words from Arima Magistrate Indrani Cedeno for his absence in court this morning.
The Magistrate who appeared to be visibly agitated initially refused to adjourn the matter on the request of attorney Fareed Ali.
Cedeno insisted that the absentee attorney find himself in court for the afternoon session.
However, the heavy downpour of rain forced the Magistrate to adjourn the matter to November24, just one day before the anniversary of the death of Keyanna Cumberbatch.
The court was told that Mr. Ali had sent a request to be excused since he had a matter scheduled for the same day in the Port of Spain High Court.
The Magistrate asked the accused Duane Lewis if he was willing to get legal aid, since he was unable to fully compensate Mr. Ali for his services.
Lewis responded in the affirmative and was given the opportunity to get such.
Cedeno stated that if the attorney failed to attend court on November 24 the matter would be handed to another attorney.
Keyanna’s father Kevon Cumberbatch, stated that he was disappointed with what occurred.
He said that he has suffered the last year of his life and he has found it very difficult to deal with what happened to his daughter.
Six year old Keyanna was raped and murdered before she was stuffed in a plastic bag and placed in barrel in the bedroom of her mother’s home in Maloney on November 25, 2013.
Dr. Valery Alexandrov who performed the autopsy revealed that she suffered extensive trauma to her skull which was cracked in half.
