An economist at the University of the West Indies believes there should be a review of the country’s fuel subsidy.
The proposal comes from UWI lecturer of Economics, Dr. Anthony Birchwood.
He suggested that the idea must be given attention especially in light of increased expenditure and declining revenues.
Dr. Birchwood speaking on Power 102.1fm this week added that the situation has been compounded by the global decline in oil prices.
He however cautioned that any reduction in the fuel subsidy should be done gradually.
The country, Dr Birchwood insisted would have benefited a lot from the fuel subsidy and this in itself should have resulted in a greater level of competitiveness.
