October 21st has been announced as the date for the local government elections.

Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, made the revelation at yesterday’s post cabinet media briefing held at the Diplomatic Centre, St. Ann’s.

The Prime Minister also confirmed that government was also moving to adopt the system of proportional representation in the local government system, and will be going to parliament to seek the necessary amendments to the bill.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar explained that the Municipal Corporations Act was passed over 20 years ago and it must be revisited to address the rapidly evolving and changing social, economic and cultural environment of the 21st century.

She said the concept of proportional representation had been advocated as a fairer and stronger system for many years now.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar also expressed confidence that the partnership will have its election machinery in place ahead of the polls.
