The system of Local Government needs fixing, and the sooner, the better.
This from Congress of the People founder, Winston Dookeran.
He told reporters on Tuesday that Local Government elections should not be delayed for long, but he said if it is delayed, then it should only be to institute reform.
“I think we must do things swiftly. I think the issue of Local Government reform has been long on the agenda. But it cannot be dealt with in isolation of the wider issues and therefore we should accelerate the process of Constitutional change.”
He said he has not heard a compelling argument to delay the elections, or to strictly adhere to the deadline set in the Constitution.
Minister Dookeran said legislators needed to strike a balance between making the right changes and acting quickly.
