Mental Health Practitioner says Police not fully trained to deal with mentally ill persons

One Mental Health Consultant says members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service are not fully trained and equipped when dealing with mentally challenged persons in intense situations.

Speaking with News Power Now this afternoon, Registered Mental Health Nurse, Carl Ryan said there needs to be someone who is qualified in mental health at any high intense case when treating with mentally ill persons.

Ryan spoke on the recent killing of Daniel Paul of Richie Street, Ste Madeline who was shot by members of the TTPS.

Ryan said officers are to be properly educated about the illness.

Speaking on the several issues which can occur when trying to restrain a mentally challenged person, Mr. Ryan said if not handled professionally, the individual can most likely go into a coma.

Daniel Paul was the 4th person to be shot and killed by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for 2017
