A proposal is being made by Tourism Minister, Gerald Hadeed, for urgent action to be taken to address fishing practices which pose a threat to the endangered leatherback turtles.
Minister Hadeed made the appeal during a question to Environmental Management Authority Chairman, Dr. Allan Bachan , during Friday’s sitting of the Joint Select Committee.
Mr. Hadeed admitted that there are several communities that benefit directly and indirectly from the turtle nesting season adding that the matter cannot be treated lightly.
Dr. Bachan said from feedback and data received, there are signs that the leatherback turtles’ population is on the decline.
