Minister of Lands Jairam Seemungal will be piloting the State Land Regularisation of tenure Amendment Bill in the Parliament tomorrow. This after Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar announced recently that the Government will be regularising squatters. Mr. Seemungal says a lot of people squat because they are unable to afford to do otherwise.
Speaking on the Power Breakfast Morning Show on Power 102.1fm this morning Mr. Seemungal said the bill will seek to regularise anyone in occupation of a dwelling house who illegally settled on lands in a designated area up to June 13th, 2014. He said the state lands regularisation of tenure act of 1998 provided for persons who applied up to september 2000.
Mr. Seemungal said when the People’s National Movement took office in 2001, it did not continue with the regularisation which lead to more problems.
