Officials from three ministries will hold discussions tomorrow aimed at implementing security and social measures to curb violence in schools and further strengthen security measures at the nation’s schools.
A media release from the National Security Ministry this afternoon said the government recognizes that the problem of school violence is not only a matter to be addressed with strict law enforcement measures, but one which requires a holistic approach that involves diverse social issues.
It added that the root cause of this behavior must be ascertained and given serious consideration.
The Ministry added that government has also recognized that violence in schools occurs in communities where there are high levels of easy access to drugs and arms and ammunition, substance abuse, low commitment to school, delinquency and violence.
In this regard, the GORTT has identified the urgent need to target misconduct in schools so as to curtail the opportunities for the initiation and evolution of deviant behaviour in society from the root of its conception.
The statement proposed that a multi-faceted approach that deals specifically with prevention rather than cure should be embarked upon.
Collaboration will take place between the Ministries of Education, Security, Social Development and Gender, Youth and Child Development.
