A Morvant man, who attempted to drive away from a police operation, is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today.
In video of the incident that was recorded and shared on social media the vehicle could be seen speeding off after initially being stopped by officers. According to police the suspect was stopped and held a short distance away.
A search of his vehicle resulted in the discovery of a 9mm handgun loaded with six rounds of ammunition. The suspect, police said, was known to officers, and has pending matters for kidnapping and firearm-related robberies. Police said they attempted to intercept the suspect during a roadblock in Morvant, near the walkover. However, the driver, who is from Mon Repos Road, evaded police and drove off.
Police said that shots were heard, and the officers, in turn, returned fire. The vehicle was pursued and it was intercepted a short distance away. The driver exited the car and surrendered to police, and he was taken into custody.
No injuries were reported in the exchange.
