East Mucurapo Secondary Schoolboys football team has continued its storied campaign in the National Intercol championships by winning its quarter-final match against Tobago champions Speyside in Tobago last evening.
The match, played at the floodlit Roxborough Sporting Complex situate some ten kilometres away from the easterly countryside district of Speyside, drew appreciative unfailing hometown support but Mucurapo won 2 goals to nil to advance to Friday’s semifinal.
Yesteryear, one of the headline makers in Secondary Schools football because of their competitiveness of play and the passion of their supporters, Mucurapo saw a fallaway from glory these last seasons as success ebbed more than flowed.
This year’s Intercol championship has however seen a talked about transformation of a Mucurapo team that finished one from last in the 14-team Premier Division of the Secondary Schools League to a team that has won the North Zone Intercol crown and looking to go all the way.
Mucurapo who are to be demoted from the League’s Premier Division to the North Zone championship for 2015 started their Intercol campaign with a 9-nil rout of Diego Martin Secondary in the preliminary round.
They then knocked out the success story team of recent vintage in St Anthony’s College and added traditional powerhouses St Mary’s College to their scalps to win the North Zone Intercol crown.
Yesterday in Tobago they lost star striker Tekay Hoyce to a red card in the 52nd minute but got their opening goal three minutes later and another, the clincher 13 minutes from full time.
They also had another player sent off in added on time but Speyside could not find a way to capital on the player advantage and Mucurapo come back to Trinidad to face East Zone winners San Juan North in semifinal Two this Friday at the Larry Gomes Stadium.
