Minister of National Security, Gary Griffith, is assuring the public that he continues to work with the officials of the Immigration Division and the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC), to determine the best way forward in resolving the matter of prolonged detention of persons housed at the IDC.
The assurance comes following Monday’s move by approximately 100 detainees to refuse any meals as a matter of gaining the attention of the relevant authorities to speed up their matters.
The inmates who participated in the strike action, were subsequently counselled, resulting in the termination of their action one day later.
The Ministry says while some of the detainees claimed to have been at the IDC for as much as six months with no clear idea as to when their detention period will end, officials have been working feverishly to resolve this issue.
The ministry says due to a lack of cooperation from detainees, the Ministry has been experiencing several challenges which continue to delay the process.
Minister Griffith said the Ministry of National Security continues to hold talks in order to charter direct flights to Nigeria and other African countries as a means of repatriating African nationals detained at the Centre.
