No asbestos found at PTSC Port-of-Spain

The Deputy General Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Public Transport Service Corporation reveals there is no asbestos in the air at its Port- of Spain Compound.

Representatives from the Transport and Industrial Workers Union recently raised the issue of asbestos at the PTSC headquarters and further testing confirmed the presence of asbestos in seven of 13 sections tested. However, test results from the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute confirmed the absence of asbestos fibres in the air.

Mr. Ramdeo made the disclosure at a media briefing at the PTSC office in Port of Spain on Tuesday.

However, despite the results General Manager of PTSC, Ronald Forde, said the company will be taking steps to have all asbestos material removed from the compound. Mr. Forde said the National Insurance Property Development Co. Ltd (NIPDEC) will take charge of the removal of the material. He said PTSC will be taking preventative measures and educating staff on the issue.
