No charges for former Minister Chandresh Sharma

by | Jul 24, 2014

SASHA SINGH AND SHARMAFyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma will not have to answer criminal assault charges since the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard found that there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction.

The DPP wrote to Acting Commissioner Stephen Williams on his findings based on the evidence that was presented to him.

DPP Gaspard wrote that Singh’s allegations of assault were “uncorroborated and may be hobbled by certain credibility factors”

The investigation was prompted after Mr. Sharma’s ex-girlfriend Sasha Singh alleged he had assaulted her in a car park at the Grand Bazaar Mall on March 12, 2014.

Ms. Singh said she was struck by the former Tourism Minister after confronting him about a child he had with school teacher Geeta Maharaj.

She said an arrangement was made to meet Mr. Sharma at the mall.

Both women had also arranged to meet up.

During the meeting Ms. Maharaj dealt Mr. Sharma several blows about his head and shoulders while Ms. Singh grabbed his tie.

The businesswoman claimed she received a slap and a push which caused her to hit her head on her car and lose consciousness for a short time.

She visited the hospital for treatment where it was confirmed she suffered a mild concussion.

Following the revelation of the incident Mr. Sharma was fired from the cabinet by Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar.

He was among two cabinet members to lose their post in same month.
