Novak Djokovic wins second Wimbledon title

Novak Djokovic won the second Wimbledon title of his career thanks to a thrilling five-set victory over Roger Federer yesterday.

The top seed came through the four-hour thriller 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 on Centre Court, going back to the top of the world rankings in the process.

On Saturday Czech Petra Kvitova defeated Canadian 20-year-old Eugenie Bouchard 6-3 6-0 to win the women’s crown.

In Formula One Motor-racing, Mercedes’ driver Lewis Hamilton recovered from sixth on the grid to win the British Grand Prix in front of his home crowd at Silverstone yesterday.

When Hamilton whose grandparents were Grenada-born by the way took the chequered flag, he did so with a 30-second lead over Valtteri Bottas, who claimed second spot, while Red Bull‘s Daniel Ricciardo took third place.

The outcome means that Hamilton is now just four points shy of teammate Rosberg in the standings.

In Basketball, At least five NBA teams have reportedly met with LeBron James‘s agent after he opted out of the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat.

The four-time MVP moved to the Heat from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010, winning two titles with the team.

According to ESPN, the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and the Cavaliers have all made presentations to the forward’s agent, Rich Paul while Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak flew into Cleveland to meet with Paul.

In cycling, Astana rider Vincenzo Nibali of Italy broke away from the pack in the final kilometres to win the second stage of the Tour de France in Sheffield , England yesterday.

The Italian decided to go for broke and it paid off as the other contenders, that included Chris Froome and Alberto Contador, couldn’t catch up.

Nibali’s victory sees him claim the overall lead and yellow jersey with a total time of nine hours, 52 minutes and 43 seconds for today’s final English stage between Cambridge and London.

 

In swimming, The swimwear worn by the Australian Commonwealth Games team has been criticised for ’emphasising’ the crotch area just a matter of weeks before the event gets underway in Glasgow.

The attire, which has been manufactured by Speedo, features designs that include kangaroo prints, emus and maps of Australia in gold and green.

Brisbane stylist Di Cant has hit out at the designs, particularly of the green and black suits, by claiming that people are drawn to the crotch area due to where the colours meet.

In athletics, Six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt has been named in Jamaica‘s sprint team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month.

The 27-year-old announced last week that he will be competing in Scotland, despite struggling with a foot injury over the course of the season.

While Bolt has made himself available for the Games, the world-record breaker suggested that he is unlikely to compete in the individual races.
