Oil spill in Chaguaramas causes havoc

by | Feb 20, 2015

oil spill_0There has been an assurance that there will be an investigation into reports of an oil spill around the North Western peninsular of Trinidad.

The assurance was given by Minister of the Environment Ganga Singh.

According to reports, dead fish had been surfacing at Scotland Bay up to late yesterday.

Fishermen have voiced concern that once the oil sinks to the sea bed it would create a somber situation.

The fishermen and Yachtees have complained that their vessels were being contaminated by oil.

The Environment Minister claimed that the EMA would be contacted and an investigation launched immediately.

Secretary of the environmental lobby group Fishermen and Friends of the Sea, Gary Aboud, reportedly said the impact of the spill was catastrophic.

He revealed that the EMA does not have jurisdiction over their operational standards.

He lamented the fact that they have no legal jurisdiction to shut down operations insisting this had to be changed.

Mr. Aboud claimed all of Chaguaramas was affected including all boat owners and boat men who worked down the islands.
