The People’s National Movement describes as sad the nation having to celebrate its 49th Independence Anniversary under a state of emergency, one which the political party views as unnecessary.

In its Independence message the PNM said it will continue to be the guardian of the nation’s democracy and fundamental human rights as  it closely monitors  this national crisis.

However, the party insisted as a nation there is much to be proud and celebrate.

It noted the country’s Independence was not won through war, conflict or struggle but mature discussion and reflection and citizens taking a conscious decision to determine their own destiny.

Achievements the PNM explained have been over the years by citizens in various areas such as sports, academics, culture, literature, energy and trade.
