Referring to the project as a Cash Cow of Corruption, President of the Unified Farmers Association, Sheraz Khan, told News Power Now that the organization has been calling for an audit into Caroni Greens for quite some time, alluding to financial wastage at the pepper producing
Mr. Khan said there are a number of agricultural projects that he deems not viable in this country.
Separately, Mr. Khan said Rudranath Indarsingh should not be one to make comments on the Caroni
Greens situation, arguing that he was once in a sitting position to make adjustments to the benefit
of the economy and country as a whole, and instead chose not to.
Last week, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said the decision to close the company came upon
realization that Caroni Greens Limited had been spending some 6 million dollars to produce 700,000
peppers and was facing private sector competition.
Dr. Rowley said Government should instead support farmers to grow peppers, saying this is what will
now be done.
He said closure of the company would be done over two to three months.
