Online shopping tax is again challenged in the parliament by the Opposition

by | Nov 10, 2016

7% online shopping taxThe hot topic of the recently introduced 7% online shopping tax, was yesterday defended in the parliament by St. Ann’s East member of parliament and Arts and Culture minister, Nyan Gadsby Dolly. The Minister noted that the online shopping tax does not apply to gift a that are sent to people in this country, via air freight.

She said despite ongoing negative outcry by Opposition members regarding government’s treatment of the lower income socio

economic class, the 7% online tax would hardly impact such persons since barrels shipped via ocean freight are exempt from the online

shopping tax.

The Minister said this new tax offers a window of opportunity for small and medium business enterprises to make themselves more

competitive.
