The Oilfield Workers Trade Union is calling for government’s intervention following the laying off of hundreds of workers at Arcelor Mittal.
Last week the Steel Workers Union of Trinidad and Tobago said it is considering legal action following the retrenchment of the workers.
The company explained that following the inability to reach agreement with the union on a proposal from management for workers with accrued vacation days to proceed on paid vacation, while workers who do not have vacation leave to engage in alternative functions on a temporary basis outside of their normal duties, it had no option but to begin a process of retrenchment.
OWTU President General, Ancil Roget, speaking with the media Monday during a demonstration outside the Office of the Prime Minister in St Clair, insisted the development highlights the need for government’s input.
