arcellor_0The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union continues to show solidarity with the workers of ArcelorMittal and their union the Steel Workers Union of Trinidad and Tobago.

In what has been described as a surprise move, earlier this week the company laid off hundreds of workers.

The company explained that this move followed the inability to reach agreement between management and the workers.

The Company explained that management offered a proposal for workers with accrued vacation days to proceed on paid vacation, while workers who did not have vacation leave could engage in alternative functions on a temporary basis outside of their normal duties,.

However the company said this was rejected.

General Secretary of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union, Ozzy Warwick sought to give clarification on the issue this morning on the Power Breakfast Show on Power 102.1fm this morning.

He said that the actions of the company were a blatant disrespect to the workers and their union.

He said that the company took the decision to release workers while they were still in discussions with their union.

He revealed that that this was a clear violation of their collective agreement.

Commenting on the Company’s statement that sought to explain its decision, Mr Warwick stated that this was unacceptable.
