The University of Trinidad & Trinidad is today saying there’s no choice but to let go 200 teachers, due to financial constraints.

President of UTT Sarim Al-Zubaidy said this is part of a strategy aimed at making the university sustainable for decades to come.

But the Oilfields Workers Trade Union, which represents workers at the UTT, says it will stand in solidarity with the teachers.

The union, along with members of staff, staged a protest at the UTT John Donaldson Campus, on Wrightson Road, Port- of- Spain.

News Power Now spoke with Political Analyst, Dr. Bishnu Ragoonath on the situation.

When asked whether the unions were being unreasonable in the current circumstance, he said they do what they believe is best for their members. He however said there lies a challenge when there is no balance in their request, all things being considered.
