The finance ministry came under scrutiny at the meeting of yesterday’s joint select committee of parliament.
It was revealed that millions of dollars in overpayments in salaries, poor inventory control and unauthorized voucher issuances had all been listed as contributors to unaccounted funds in the Ministry of Finance.
This revelation was made in the Auditor General’s report for 2015 and prompted calls for greater internal inspection at the ministry.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Maurice Suite called for an internal audit to wipe out corruption.
He also said a contributor to the situation was that staff was not adequately trained to detect and responds to such situations.
