PM Kamla P-BPrime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has halted debate on the controversial Judges Salaries and Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2013 and the Retiring Allowances (Legislative) Amendment Bill 2013.

The Prime Minister announced in the Senate yesterday afternoon that the Government had decided to put the bills on hold.

Prior to that Mrs. Persad Bissessar stated that  the government is willing to refer the Judges Salaries and Pensions (Amendment) Bill to a Senate Select Committee for review.

In a media release the Prime Minister stated the Bill was passed with the full support of the opposition.

It also has the full support of the Retired Judges Association.

However, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar is saying that the national interest is what must be served.
The media statement indicated the government would not proceed with approving the Bills until all perspectives and opinions are ventilated.

It added the government is also willing to accept and adhere to the recommendations made by the Senate Select Committee.
