The Prime Minister of this country has referred to the situation that left one police officer dead at the Port- of -Spain General Hospital this morning, as deplorable.
Speaking during a media conference art the National Operations Centre this afternoon, Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar said there is no need for a State of Emergency in Trinidad and Tobago at this time.
She sought to assure citizens that there is no uprising in this country and there is no other incident that warrants concern.
Mrs. Persad Bissessar pointed to social media, saying that it has been very busy but again reiterating that there has been no related occurrences.
Meanwhile, Acting Commissioner of Police, Stephen Williams has said investigations into the matter are now underway.
He extended condolences to the family and friends of 27 -year -old police constable Sherman Maynard who was shot and killed earlier today.
He said hand guns were utilized by the prisoners who escaped, adding that the dead police officer was shot in the shoulder and lower abdomen.
He said the officer had been wearing a bullet proof vest but this did not save him.
ACP Williams also confirmed that a hand grenade was found on the Eastern side of the Port- of- Spain prison and it has been confiscated for evidence.
The Acting Commissioner urged citizens to go about their business in Port -of -Spain as usual.
