Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, will address the United Nations General Assembly this evening at 7:30.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar arrived in New York on Tuesday morning to attend the 68th United Nations General Assembly.
According to a release from the Office of the Prime Minister, as current Chair of Caricom, the Prime Minister will deliver the Caricom statement to the General Assembly, and in addition speak as the lead Member State in Caricom responsible for the security portfolio in the Quasi Cabinet.
The release stated that the Prime Minister will deposit Instruments of ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty. This means that Trinidad and Tobago will formally express its consent to be bound by the provisions of the ATT.
It also means that Trinidad and Tobago will apply Articles 6 and 7 of the Treaty provisionally pending its entry into force.
After the deposit of 50 Instruments of Ratification the Treaty will enter into force.
Trinidad and Tobago will be examining its national legislation to ensure compatibility with the treaty.
The release stated that this country is committed to assist the region by hosting regional workshops to address issues relating to the full implementation of the treaty.
The PM is due to return home tomorrow.
