Police hunt for illegal quarry operators

NEWS GRAPHIC 7The Minister of National Security said it has made a major break-through in the fight against illegal quarrying.

Over the weekend a joint operation comprising members of the Northern Division Task Force, Trinidad & Tobago Defence Force, the Specialist Evidence Recovery Unit and the Air Division ventured into the Matura Forest where they discovered the illegal ventures.

The team seized six excavators, one over-loader, seven trucks, two backhoes and eight private cars.

All the seized items are being impounded pending the outcome of further investigations.

Police said they expect to arrest suspects soon.

Meanwhile, the Trinidad & Tobago Coast Guard intercepted a pirogue at Cabresse Point on the southern side of Chacachacare Island and seized a quantity of illegal drugs.

Three (3) crocus bags containing 80 packets of marijuana with a total weight of 46kg and an estimated street value of $621,000.00 was discovered.

The drugs and the vessel’s lone occupant was taken to Staubles Bay and handed over to the Organized Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau, Customs and Excise and the

Western Division Police for further investigations.
