Police Officer Appears In Court and Is Granted Bail on Bribery Related Charges

A police officer, charged with allegedly accepting more than $5000 in bribes, to drop cocaine charges laid against a man, was today granted $750,000 bail when he appeared in the Siparia Magistrate’s court.

Forty Two year old Police Constable Clinton Noel faces seven charges arising out of the allegations. The policeman who has at least 15 years service was not handcuffed when he appeared in court today.

The officer who was last attached to the Siparia police station, was allowed to sit on a chair reserved for police officers and female prisoners prior to appearing in the courtroom.

Noel was not called upon to plea to any of the charges laid against him. The alleged bribe is said to have taken place between March 23rd and April 25th at Quinam Road, Siparia and SS Erin Road, Siparia.

The maximum penalty for the offence is a $500,000 fine or ten years imprisonment. The matter has been adjourned to May 26.
